Arnold Presentation

Dr. Arnold spoke in class about his experiences with teaching and finding copy problems. He talked about his help was not always appreciated like when he tried to tell this woman her signs were wrong. He said they should be the Smiths instead of the Smith's. He also told the story of how he had his class and everyone he knew harass Bennigans until they changed their open to close time to 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. I think his stories and his incite was very valuable because I got insight into what it is like to have fun with the language instead of just looking at it as a bunch of boring rules even though those rules are important and give you the means to have fun.

In the article, he discussed how he was a true copy editor and how it affected every part of his life. It was something he was always doing in every situation whether it was on a menu at a restaurant or on yard sale signs, he was constantly editing copy. He also said he was an addict to doing so because it was something that he loved doing. It sometimes got him into trouble though because people did not want his help.

In class we were assigned the task of dividing into groups and make a team of editors. We were instructed to pick a team name and then start deciding who would be the chief editor. Our team name is the Muckrakers and our chief editor is Kayla. We started on our design of a logo after much deliberation. It started with the turkey hand idea but have since moved onto a box idea and one with the letters UWRC flowing together like a river. Then we tried to figure out an idea and theme for our series. We had talked about the theme of building a better community but it did not go very far. The other members of our team was Jonas, Meghann, and I. We started our writing our memo as a group before we left the class so that we could all start to contribute to it while our chief editor finished it.

Tips for writing headlines

A key term to headline writing is the need to be accurate. If your accurate then it gives the reader a good idea of what the article is about. The headline may be the only part that the reader will see so its important to give good, clear and concise information. The headline should also reflect the story. It should have a similar tone to the story and should make the same sort of statements the story does with out using the exact same facts in the headline. You also want to watch the punctuation and the verb usage in your headlines.

Your headlines should be like mini-stories taken away from the whole. With print this is a very easy thing to do as you can write more words in a headline than you can with online. Online headlines are different from print because they have to be more concise and written in a different manner than print. They usually do not start with the because when people use search engines it will get lost in a long list of other results. It is best to use the subject the article is about. If it is being sent out in email form you want to write a headline that makes it clear what the article is about because otherwise someone may delete it. The first word you use is one that is the most important and carries the most amount of weight.

1. The most important factor in the relationship between media and consumers is credibility.

 It starts with the reporter then it goes to the city editor and then from his desk it goes to the copy-desk chief and he decides where it goes and then flows back to the copy editor who polishes the story and then finally it goes back to the copy-desk chief.

 The first step is to read the entire story, then you go back through and edit it thoroughly and finally go back through rereading the  story and looking for anything else you missed.

5. What are the three R's of copy editing?

 Reader-centered, readable and right. It means that the story has the reader in mind and they can understand and read the story the way it was meant. The right part means to make sure that every part of the story is correct so you will not get in trouble for libel.

6. Difference between proofreading and copy editing.

 The main difference is that the proofreading stage is not the time to continue editing or rewriting the story. It is just to make sure that everything is correct with capitalization and minor changes.

7. Difference between macro editing and micro editing.

 Macro editing deals with the big picture of editing. Where does the story go and how does it fit with the paper. Micro editing deals with all the details of each story and editing of each story.

I think checking numbers and doing the copy editing involved with numbers is very complicated. Math is not one of my strong suites in life and so it some times is slightly confusing when you have to try and figure out if what the reporter put is correct. I do believe that it is very helpful and efficient to make sure the numbers are correct.

Copy Editors finding more of a market in Online Journalism

According to a research done by C Max Magee of 400 online managers and producers said that for online journalism, the most desired skill sets were relatively compared to that of print copy editors. I feel that the way that I'm going with in my major of Online Journalism is going to be very beneficial because I already know how to use photoshop and video editing software, as well as some dreamweaver and other html software. And by the end of my college years and I get my degree I will be able to do everything that most news jobs want. I think with the trend moving into the digital age and my abilities with programs to make and produce the internet news stories will set me ahead of most other people. I can take the knowledge I have of print newspapers and the story writing and copy editing along with the software knowledge should give me a big edge over others.

MU Baseball Team

The Marshall University baseball team possesses something that can possibly help the program stay successful for years’ to come.

                  Thundering Herd head baseball  coach Jeff Waggoner said what he believes to be the key to the team’s future success is simply freshmen talents. “We have some good young players that will continue to get better and better,” Waggoner said. “To get playing time as a freshman is so valuable. We have a lot of young guys that are playing right now and that will help us be a great program for a long time.”

                  Last season Waggoner utilized the skills of Victor Gomez as the team’s designated hitter. As a freshman, Gomez recorded a .358 batting average, 34 runs, 77 hits, 11 home-runs and had 47 RBIs in 215 plate appearances.

                  Waggoner has inserted another freshmen into the designated hitter role Gomez previously occupied, because Gomez has continued to show significant improvement at the plate and has also been able to contribute defensively during his sophomore season. That player is Thor Meeks, a freshman slugger from Hurricane, WV.

                  So far this season Meeks has recorded a .248 batting average, 18 runs, 28 hits, 7 home-runs and has 24 RBIs in 113 plate appearances. Meeks’numbers have declined slightly over the past few games, but Waggoner said it’s fairly common among freshman.

                  “Gomez went through the same thing last year where he went through some tough times and he fought through it. They’re both great players and great hitters. I look for great things out of both of them and I think their work ethics will get them there.”

Not only are the two comparable statistically, but their physical characteristics also bare an eerie resemblance. Both have dark hair and stand 6 feet 1 inch tall. Gomez weighs in at 230 pounds, while Meeks trails slightly at 226.

“Well, I’m a better hitter than (Meeks) is, but he has more power,” Gomez said with a laugh. “I can see how he reminds everyone of me last year because we pretty much had the same role on the team. We have the same approach at the plate and we both try to do things to help the team win.”

Meeks said he welcomes the comparisons. Gomez said, “It is always good when a freshman comes in and has a big impact.He’s been a solid part of the middle of the lineup and he’s been there all year,” “He’s been helping me and Nate (Lape) get good pitches to hit, and that’s an important thing.

                  The Herd will take on conference opponent Houston in a three-game series at Appalachian Power Park this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 7:00 p.m.

I enjoyed having to edit this story because lately I have been reading more on the AP style and also in the reading of the book. It made me feel like I was finally getting somewhere in this class even though everything that I edited may not have been correct or in the right spot. It was very exciting to see some progress instead of feeling completely lost in this course. I am nervous though, since I have never really done any type of editing before.

Mad Men just another parody

The style of writing in this article is interesting. It holds his opinions and still presents the facts of the show as the way they happened. The author states his opinion with phrases to each story line such as "Cheech and Chong", " Woody Allen", and "Davey and Goliath". I did feel that his writing was lacking on cohesiveness especially towards the end of his article because of the way that his last summary of the episode just lead into the end of the story with no real break of paragraph. Also I know that this is an online article but I did not like the way he ended with just random questions instead of having some sort of conclusion as to what all of the summaries meant as one whole piece.

First Time Edit

I was not able to edit one of my other classmates writings today because there was not enough copies to go around. I am relieved in a way though, since I have not edited anyone's writing. I was very nervous about having to do the editing of my paper as well because I have never had anything published and since all of the writings I have written were big papers. I found some old small stories I did for a class while I was at my other college but they were not very good. So I guess I'm still waiting to see what it feels like when it is my real work being edited.

Hello, I am Michael Spurlock, and I am a senior who just recently switched majors from advertising to online journalism. I am from St. Albans, WV, and I transferred to Marshall last year from another college in Springfield, Missouri. I love hockey, soccer, and hardcore music. I hope to one day work for the BBC because I am very fond of their news reporting for some reason or another.

The Tensions between North and South Korea are finally beginning to ease with the first official meeting between the two states in nearly two years. The North Koreans had come to pay their respect to the former South Korean leader. Kim Dae-jung, who had tried to unite the Korean peninsula. This comes after North Korea has shown some loosening of their threats of nuclear war and intense stand-offs with South Korea. The North Koreans have made diplomatic efforts to ease tensions with allowing families split by the border to be reunited and assuring that cross- border businesses would soon resume. The U.N. believes that the reason there has been relaxing of the position of North Korea is due to the food shortages they are experiencing.

The Thundering Herd has yet to decide which of it's incoming freshman players are going to be redshirted and with those rumors floating around it is giving hope to some players that they may be able to get some playing time. One of those freshman players is linebacker, Quanthony Fletcher. He is one of the top recruits from this years freshman class. He was rated in the nation's top 10 prospects at his position by multiple recruiting services. He was recruited by Tennessee, Purdue, Colorado State, and UCF before he decided on Marshall. He plans to get some playing time this season after learning things very quickly and receiving some extra help from defensive coordinator Rick Minter.
